Let’s Predict the First Cancellation of the 2018-2019 Season

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

The 2018-2019 television season gets underway tonight. Every year since 2009, I’ve asked readers to predict which new fall TV show will be cancelled first. Given how the networks are loath to actually cancel new shows these, it may be months (or longer) before the first true cancellation is announced. However, we will likely know much whether any of the 18 new network shows debuting in the coming weeks are doomed, even if the networks refuse to make the inevitable cancellations official.

Viewers have already had the chance to watch “sneak previews” of two new shows: Rel on FOX and I Feel Bad on NBC. Many more will premiere over the course of the next two weeks. Low ratings don’t mean nearly as much as they did a decade ago or even five years ago. Shows with few viewers and seemingly weak demographics can survive for reasons we as viewers may never fully understand. That doesn’t mean we can’t make our best guesses.

Cast Your Vote

Over 630 votes were cast in last year’s “First Cancellation” poll. Let’s see if we can beat that total this year. Cast your vote for the first cancellation of the 2018-2019 season now.

Slow to Cancel

During the 2016-2017 season, the networks refused to officially cancel any of their new fall shows until May. The first cancellation didn’t come until February 2017 when CBS pulled its mid-season replacement Doubt off the air after just two episodes. The network later burned off the remaining 11 episodes during the summer.

Two shows can claim they were the first cancellation of the 2017-2018 season. ABC pulled new drama Ten Days in the Valley from its scheduled on October 26th, 2017 after just four weeks. But the network didn’t officially cancel it and, starting in December, began burning off the remaining episodes on Saturdays. Less than a week later on November 1st, CBS pulled its new sitcom Me, Myself & I after six weeks, effectively cancelling it. The remaining episodes didn’t air until the summer.

So, which show was the first cancellation of the 2017-2018 season? I think that dubious honor should go to Me, Myself & I.

First Cancellations, 2009-2018

Here’s a look at the first cancellation from the past nine seasons, with the cancellation date in brackets:

2009-2010The Beautiful Life: TBL (The CW, 2 episodes) [9/25/2009]
2010-2011Lonestar (FOX, 2 episodes) [9/28/2010]
2011-2012The Playboy Club (NBC, 3 episodes) [10/4/2014]
2012-2013Made in Jersey (CBS, 2 episodes) [10/10/2014]
2013-2014Lucky 7 (ABC, 2 episodes) [10/4/2014]
2014-2015Manhattan Love Story (ABC, 4 episodes) [10/24/2014]
2015-2016Wicked City (ABC, 3 episodes) [11/13/2015]
2016-2017Doubt* (CBS, 2 episodes) [2/24/2017]
2017-2018Me, Myself & I** (CBS, 6 episodes) [11/1/2017]

*If you want to get technical, Pitch (FOX) became the first fall series cancellation from the 2016-2017 season on May 1, 2017.
**ABC pulled Ten Days in the Valley from its schedule on October 26th, 2017 but didn’t officially cancel it.

What do you think will be the first cancellation of the 2018-2019 season? Rather than first cancellation, should we be predicting the first show to be pulled by a network? Hit the comments with your thoughts and predictions.

State releases school accountability scores

Posted By Max Brantley on Fri, Oct 12, 2018 at 12:39 PM

The state Education Department has released letter grades assigned Arkansas schools based on standardized tests in 2017-18.

The schools may be searched at this link.

Said the release:

Both the 2018 ESSA School Index and Accountability At-A-Glance reports are available on ADE's My School Info website. The Accountability At-A-Glance, a quick overview of each school's state (letter grade) and federal accountability results, can be found on the My School Info page under the School Rating tab. For more details about each school's data, please read the ESSA School Index report, which includes students' weighted achievement and growth on state required assessments for grades three through 10, graduation rates, and school quality and student success indicators. Please follow these easy steps to access the school reports.

I'd like to see these results divorced from single-letter grades for all sizes and shapes, a folly, and better analyzed as to where schools break expectations based on poverty levels and other factors, such as non-English speakers.

Warner Music Group (WMG) has launched a seed-stage investment fund called WMG Boost.

The fund is aimed at supporting ‘entrepreneurial growth and innovative thinking’ in the music industry.

According to WMG, the multimillion-dollar fund will be used to invest in early-stage businesses ‘within and adjacent to the recorded music business’, in areas ranging from AI, to blockchain, virtual reality, mobile gaming, voice, and more.

In addition to seed funding, startups will have access to WMG’s music industry expertise as they develop their products.

WMG has previously invested in the likes of Landr and Pexeso and is a founding member of startup accelerator, Techstars Music.

“WMG Boost is all about nurturing the diversity of ideas within the music ecosystem.”

Top Fall Fashion Trends for 2018

fall-fashion

A lot of people are interested in fall fashion, and the person reading this just might be one of them. People like to keep up with the times, and some people even like to be ahead of the fashion game, so it’s good to know what fashion trends are going to be popping up in fall 2018. Will they be a repeat from fall 2017 or is it going to be totally new? Read this to find out! Some of the trends might come as a surprise, but this will help one be able to know what’s going to be in this year.

Plaid is still in.

Plaid is fairly timeless, and this season plaid is going to be in yet again. Plaid shirts and flannels are always cute, but there are some other options for people out there. Do they want to wear plaid pants or a plaid dress? Go for it. Plaid scarves or skirts or knee-high socks are all in and adorable. There is so much that one can do with so much plaid.

Oversized jackets and sweaters are in.

This trend is a lot of fun, because it is also very comfortable. Who doesn’t love putting on an oversized sweater and cuddling up with a mug of hot apple cider? It’s relaxing and cozy, and the best part is that it’s totally acceptable to wear this and leggings outside in the fall. At this rate, everyone is going to have the most comfy fall that they have had yet to have.

Bright and mismatched patterns are in.

How about those that love bright patterns? Now bright and mismatched is in, so one can mismatch their bright patterns however they please, and it will be considered fashionable, especially if it is oversized.

Flowers are in.

In the past, floral patterns have only been worn in spring, but now they are coming onto the fashion scene during fall too, so one can confidently wear their favorite flower-covered dress during autumn too, and everyone will just love the style.

Leather, especially black leather, is in.

Who doesn’t love leather? Well, leather is becoming big this fall season. Black leather especially, as one will find lots of people wearing black leather jackets or dresses. This edgy style may be what one needs to expand their wardrobe just a bit, because, after all, it is fun to try something new.

Futuristic Style is in.

So, what is futuristic style? It’s bright and glossy and primarily white and silver. This interesting style looks like it comes right off of a spaceship. It’s bold and not for everyone, but it might be fun to try it this autumn season.

This generation is bringing forth new and bold fashion that no other generation has seen before, and at the end of the day it is all about expressing oneself brightly and freely. One should find what they feel comfortable in, because that is what they are going to look and feel best in.

GOT7 Earn First Top 10 Entry on YouTube Songs Chart With 'Lullaby'

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

With their new album and single, GOT7 scored top 10 entries on Billboard's world and emerging-artist charts -- as expected from the stadium-playing boy band -- but this era also brings a new top 10 for the multinational outfit.

GOT7 earned their first top 10 entry on the YouTube Songs chart with new single "Lullaby." Typically dominated by hip-hop, Latin and pop artists, the weekly chart lists the most popular videos across the video platform and only sees a small amount of K-pop acts able to enter inside the 25-position ranking. Earlier this year, the septet earned their first-ever entry on YouTube Songs with "Look" -- which hit No. 21 -- with only five other Korean acts able to land on the chart in 2018.

To date, the trippy-yet-dreamy video to the band's glitchy, pop-house-R&B hybrid track has received more than 38 million views.

Altogether, GOT7's new Present: You has been a mighty return to the charts, scoring them their 10th top 10 entry on the World Albums chart (at No. 5 on this week's chart after peaking at No. 3), their sixth top 10 on Heatseekers Albums (peaking at No. 7) with lead single "Lullaby" marking their 13th top 10 single on the World Digital Song Sales chart (peaking at No. 2, tying the group's highest ranking to date).

Watch how the guys bring "Lullaby" to life with the first comeback performance of the track below:

Fotini Paraskakis Leaves Endemol Shine for The Story Lab

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Endemol Shine’s former Asia MD, Fotini Paraskakis, has joined The Story Lab, the Dentsu Aegis-backed content company that counts “Ninja Warrior” among its shows. Paraskakis will be based in the company’s London office as EVP, entertainment, overseeing scripted and unscripted.

The Story Lab said Paraskakis will work with producers, platforms, and broadcasters as it adds to its program lineup. Endemol Shine said earlier this year that she would exit the company as the production and distribution giant, which is currently on the block, restructured its business in Southeast Asia.

The Story Lab’s new-recruit will report to president, Michael Iskas. “Fotini, with her extensive entertainment background and proven track record, will be spearheading our TV offering, surrounded by our talented acquisitions, development, sales and marketing teams around the world,” he said.

“I am extremely excited to be part of such a passionate team, supporting content globally. With so many new platforms around the world, the opportunities for innovative and disruptive content are endless,” added Paraskakis. ”The Story Lab has the ability to engage directly with creators to bring these ideas to life, offering a fresh perspective to end users and viewers.”

The Story Lab funds and distributes programming across different genres. Its properties include “Game of Clones,” “Hall Pass,” and “All Star Driving School.”

'Widows': Film Review | TIFF 2018

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

What could have remained just a solid crime thriller about bereft women who take matters into their own hands has been electrified by racial, political and gender issues in Widows. Handling a genre piece for the first time, director Steve McQueen ups the ante of nearly every scene by doubling and tripling the import by various means, creating in the process a provocative portrait of life on the troubled south side of Chicago. Commercial prospects look robust for this potent female-centric action drama.

Adapted by McQueen and Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn, Widows is based on two six-part British television crime drama seasons broadcast in 1983 and 1985 and written by Lynda La Plant, who also penned a novelization published in 1985. La Plant is best known as the writer of the classic British TV series Prime Suspect.

McQueen seems intent here on keeping the drama sizzling on several burners at every moment. Most filmmakers would have been content to stick with the surface story, which is certainly involving and good as far as it goes. But McQueen, in his first outing since 12 Years a Slave five years ago, really loads it on in nearly every scene, nay, every shot, as if to prove that he can deliver the kinetic goods with the best of them while also talking about the things he cares about most.

The director slashingly puts across loads of incident, much of it grimly tragic, in the first few minutes. Veronica (Viola Davis) and husband Harry (Liam Neeson), hardly spring chickens, engage in some very deep kissing in bed in their stylish apartment. Linda (Michelle Rodriguez) tends to her dress shop. Alice (Elizabeth Debicki) has a jerky boyfriend, while Belle (Cynthia Erivo) is a hairdresser. In short order, all the women are bereft, their men killed in some shockingly explosive action.

The primary focus throughout is Veronica, who seems most deeply aggrieved but soon learns she has the most to lose, as local black gang boss Jamal (Brian Tyree Henry) informs her that her late husband owes him $2 million; if she doesn’t fork it over within the month, his hyper-violent goon Jatemme (Daniel Kaluuya, very scary) will make sure it’s the last payment she never makes.

Also in the mix are longtime Chicago politicos Tom Mulligan (Robert Duvall) and his hotshot son Jack (Colin Farrell). Demographically, these Irish guys know they’re very last-century, their ways of fixing elections and paying people off clearly nearing an end. But they’re still holding on, brutally, if need be, and they’ve rearranged precincts to stay in the game a bit longer.

Quite early on, developments begin accumulating that are best not revealed, as the most important of them are unanticipated and complicate the narrative in ways that are generally enriching of the drama rather than just jammed in for the sake of surprise. Still, it can be said that Veronica discovers something about her husband’s business practices she never knew, something that establishes all the women as having been so wronged that, despite their lack of experience at pulling something off, they’ve got to plough ahead with a risky endeavor both for revenge and their own sense of worth. Their motivation feels entirely legitimate.

Davis’ Veronica, the victim of longtime deception as well as a double-whammy loss, remains at the center of the tricky plot, her need for vengeance, comprehension and, ultimately, survival providing the most burning motivation of all the women. Stern, driven, unstoppable and haunted, Veronica is the axle around which the rest of the action turns, and Davis is reliably outstanding in the role.

The other woman with a bit of extra dimension is Debicki’s Alice, whose loony mother (Jacki Weaver) essentially pushes her into prostitution, an assignation that results in an equivocal entanglement with a messed up businessman (Jon Bernthal). Rodriguez has the least interesting role as a conflicted mom, but Erivo emerges as a cool and muscular action heroine in the later-going.

McQueen and his ultra-adept cinematographer Sean Bobbitt find myriad unexpected ways of staging and shooting familiar generic scenes. One striking interlude has Farrell’s politico and his assistant engage in a long conversation in a car without being seen, the camera instead surveying the journey from in front and above so as to sharply illustrate the economic difference between one precinct and another. The pair have come up with fresh ways to shoot expository and frequently close-quarter scenes all the way through.

As amplified from the original material for today’s political moment and sensibilities, Widows is a solid piece of genre fiction made more resonant by how its creators have bored down into its characters and sociological implications in ways specifically designed to examine some of the rotten underpinnings of business as usual. As often happened back in the noir melodramas of the 1940s and 1950s, an urban crime story here once again serves as a successful vehicle for exploring what ails a society.

Connan Mockasin: Jassbusters

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Since the late 1970s, New Zealand has produced an array of skewed pop savants, from Martin Phillipps to the Kilgour brothers, Chris Knox to Lorde. But is there another Kiwi who has inveigled themselves and their peculiarities into the modern indie-rock stratosphere quite like Connan Mockasin? Carrying the air of an alien beamed down to earth, Mockasin has popped up alongside some of indie music’s most revered figures: James Blake, Charlotte Gainsbourg, MGMT, John Cale, and Dev Hynes, to name a few. No matter the artist, he brings a surrealist bent to the proceedings. He’s a naturally helium-huffed crooner, and his songs meander like a stroll in the park, his warped guitar lines as knee-bending as a good curveball pitcher.

But his proximity to bigger pop acts hasn’t done much to alter Mockasin’s approach to his own music. Five years after Caramel, Mockasin’s third album, Jassbusters, finds him to be just as squishy, unmoored, and diaphanous as he was when he debuted with 2010’s Forever Dolphin Love. On Jassbusters, Mockasin and bandmates drift in and out of songs shaped like murky pools, full of submerged pulses, noodly reveries, and murmured lyrics that briefly bewitch and then wiggle right beyond remembrance.

While its title might titillate, “Charlotte’s Thong” instead wanders a far different path. The groove is slack, unformed, and stoned as an early-’70s country-rock session; as the band nods along, it summons memories of Fleetwood Mac and Michael Nesmith, Mockasin’s guitar lines by turns lethargic and tart. It’s appealingly hazy, but Mockasin’s marble-mouthed delivery (is he singing about thongs or songs?) comes dangerously close to dissolving into gibberish.

The album is apparently intended as a companion piece to Bostyn ’n Dobsyn, a “five-part melodrama” directed by and starring Mockasin. But it’s hard to imagine any plot or visuals making the album cohere any better. Does it matter who Momo or Con Conn actually are? The bits of dialogue that crop up (“You can do anything to get good grades,” or “Your grades are slipping, every subject except for music”) don’t help clarify matters much.

As a result, a strange, slow fog settles in over the course of the record, which comes to feel like an album-length exercise in torpor, clouding over some unabashedly gorgeous turns by Mockasin. He has James Blake and his fragile falsetto take the lead on “Momo’s,” a languorous song that floats like exhaled smoke. “Last Night” also moves at the speed of deep breathing, a gently tapped ride cymbal providing the subtle pulse as Mockasin does his best Brothers Gibb quiver. It has all the makings of a heartbreaking, slow-burning soul ballad, were it not for the weird squeaking-balloon sounds that continually disrupt the setting. “Con Conn Was Impatient” also smolders, even as Mockasin’s pleas slowly crumble into ululations and wordless ash. Rather than convey a sense of melodrama, Jassbusters often feels like the wispy, lite-rock tribute that Ween never got around to making.
