This week Dateline reporter Evan Williams follows President of Greek Community in Victoria Bill Papastergiadis as he goes back to his ‘Motherland’ to examine the scale of devastation of a fire in Mati, and help the victims begin the process of rebuilding their lives.

A tragic fire in Greece’s seaside town Mati took 99 lives in July this year. It was the world’s second largest fire death toll after Australia’s Black Saturday fires in 2009, which became a catalyst for major change in Australian bushfire management and early warning systems.

Many questions remain: could those who lost their lives in Mati have been saved? Did the austerity measures inflicted on Greece play a part in the devastation? What role did climate change play in the fire’s force and intensity?

While in Mati, Evan also speaks to the survivors, fire-fighters, experts and civil servants to piece together what went wrong.

Dimitri Kardiakos, whose family lived in the region for generations, lost his family home and some of his lifelong friends. “You don’t see fire at the beginning but you feel a kind of heat as if you are opening the oven you cook in”, he tells Dateline. “The heat burns you. There was panic. Everything was exploding. It was like a state of war. There were tears, screaming but we were all saying we wanted to live”.

The biggest loss of life and property that Greece has ever experienced resulted in three days of national mourning. And that mourning extended to Australia’s Greek community (the largest Greek diaspora worldwide), who witnessed a similar tragedy almost a decade ago on Australia’s Black Saturday.

In Melbourne, Bill Papastergiadis raised AUD $200,000 with Melbourne’s Greek Community, and then travelled to Mati to distribute the funds to the victims. “For Greek Australians, there is almost an umbilical connection to the mother land,” he recalls to Dateline. “Pain felt in Greece, we felt that immediately in Australia. I’m here to do my bit as small as it is to provide some help and assistance”.

Mati locals tell Dateline that public outrage was fuelled by lack of proper action by the government officials. Vangelis Bournos, Mayor of Rafina-Pikermi, says his pleas for help were ignored. “We saw the fire at 4:40pm. They [authorities] had until 5:10 to give this evacuation order so that we could have evacuated the area within an hour. If a preventive evacuation plan had been given at the start of the fire, everyone would have been saved”.

Demetrious Karavellas, President of The World Wildlife Federation in Greece, had been warning the government to invest in prevention and preparedness to avoid tragedies like this owing to climate change in Greece.

“The reality of climate change in a country like Greece is a harsh reality and it’s a reality that we need to adapt to. Forests in Greece and Mediterranean because of climate change are becoming a lot more vulnerable and also a lot more valuable. Higher temperature, stronger winds and a problematic management system, it’s not going to work. I hope that something will change after 2018”.

In the aftermath of this tragedy, criticism has mounted over how authorities responded to the blaze – in particular, the absence of a warning system or evacuation plan. In response, the Deputy Minister for Citizen Protection resigned and the Heads of both Police and Fire Brigade were dismissed.

Bill Papastergiadis, however, hopes that the Australian contribution can help the victims to start rebuilding their lives in their own way. “Why did we do this? We did it because wherever Greek people live they hurt for their fellow Greek”.

Was Cesar Sayoc an Obama-Supporting Stripper Before Trump’s Rise?

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

CLAIM

Cesar Sayoc, the man accused of mailing bombs to prominent Democratic lawmakers and media organizations critical of President Trump, used to be a stripper and was “long known to support Obama.”

RATING

WHAT'S TRUE

Casar Sayoc has been employed as a stripper in the past and more recently has managed stripping acts.

WHAT'S FALSE

There is no evidence that Sayoc was ever a supporter of President Obama.

ORIGIN

On 27 October 2018, a Facebook account bearing the face of controversial 19th-century Canadian Prime Minister John H. Macdonald shared a post that alleged two facts about Cesar Sayoc, the accused perpetrator of several attempted mail bombings: that he used to work as a stripper, and that he “was long known to support Obama” during that time:

It is unclear what the author of this post meant to imply by combining the fact that Sayoc worked in strip clubs with the false assertion that he was an Obama supporter, but of the two claims raised, there is only support for the first.

In the days following Sayoc’s arrest, several media outlets attempted to profile the man who had covered his live-in van with Trump memes and sent what appeared to be pipe bombs to Trump’s political and media opponents. These profiles describe a directionless individual who worked at strip clubs in various capacities throughout his life, but who only found a political awakening in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election, when he became a supporter of President Trump.

Was Cesar Sayoc a Stripper?

Several individuals have stated that Cesar Sayoc has not only been employed at strip clubs, but worked as a stripper himself. Ohio event promoter Tony Valentine told the Washington Examiner that he “hired Cesar Sayoc to strip on multiple occasions during the 1990s and that Sayoc, now 56, traveled the country for similar appearances.”

“He really couldn’t find his niche in life, and I guess he found it now,” Valentine told the Washington Examiner. “Back in the ’90s, he was running around from Minnesota to the Carolinas to Florida. He was like a gypsy.”

For two months in 2004, according to a profile in the New York Times, Sayoc was married to a woman who was also a stripper. That woman’s mother told the Times that the two “went on the circuit together” as “dancers”:

He had a short-lived marriage to a woman identified in court papers as Roberta Altieri that ended in divorce in Oklahoma City in 2004, according to court records. Billie Mode, the mother of his ex-wife, said the couple worked in strip clubs and were married just two months. “They were dancers,” Ms. Mode said. “They went on the circuit together.”

According to Valentine (the event promoter who had worked with Sayoc in the 1990s), he had heard that, as of about five years ago, Sayoc was working as an employee at a female strip club while performing on the side at an all-male strip club in Florida.

More recently, he has appeared in posts on the Facebook page “Chippen Fellas,” apparently run by Sayoc himself to promote his “Hard Rock International Entertainment” brand. This page advertised all-male shows and in one instance included a dated picture of someone who appears to be Sayoc alongside more recent photos of younger men. It is unclear whether he ever performed with this group or merely served as a manager:

According to the Times, Sayoc showed up to work as a DJ at a West Palm Beach strip club named Ultra the day before he was arrested.

Did Sayoc Support Obama and Other Democrats In The Past?

There is no evidence to support the claim that Sayoc, who sent a pipe bomb to the Obama family, ever supported President Obama. Sayoc registered to vote as a Republican in Florida on 4 March 2016, “just ahead of the March 2016 Republican primary,” according to the Associated Press. Some have attempted to use doctored images from a MyLife.com background check to assert he was a registered Democrat, but this claim is not rooted in reality. A check of the official Florida voter registry indicates he is currently registered as a Republican.

By all accounts, Sayoc lived a fairly apolitical life leading up to the 2016 presidential election. Ronald Lowy, a lawyer for the Sayoc family who represented Cesar during a 2002 case in which he threatened to bomb an electric company over a bill he disputed, told the Times that although Sayoc’s family members were Democrats, Cesar himself “seemed to have no outspoken partisan views during the 2002 case.”

Lowy’s recollection jibes with what a different lawyer, Daniel Lurvey (who represented Sayoc against theft charges in 2013 and 2014), remembers of the man’s political leanings. He told the Washington Examiner that he could not recall Sayoc ever discussing politics. Instead, it appears that Sayoc’s chief interests during this time were bodybuilding and wrestling:

When they first met [over the 2002 bomb threat case], Mr. Lowy said, Mr. Sayoc brought in a scrapbook filled with notes and photographs he had collected from wrestlers, bodybuilders and strippers, table scraps from a world that he idolized. “He comes across like a 15-year-old,” Mr. Lowy said. “He has a total lack of maturity.” […] He said that Mr. Trump’s angry rhetoric and his appeals to the “forgotten man and woman” during the 2016 campaign seemed to strike a deep chord with Mr. Sayoc, whose father had abandoned the family when he was a child.

By 2015, it became clear that Sayoc was an outspoken and enthusiastic Trump supporter. That year, In what may have been an effort to make a false insurance claim, he reported to police that $45,000 worth of “suits and costumes he needed for his business” were stolen from his van. According to the Times, that police report noted “that of the 139 pieces he said were taken, 11 were the president’s clothing brand.”

Sayoc also attended a Brevard College alumni event with members of his college soccer team that year, during which he “quickly made clear he was a fanatical supporter of Mr. Trump, and bombarded them with racist and misogynist conspiracy theories.” Two managers at a pizza shop where Sayoc worked in 2017 recall the man making racist remarks while explicitly attacking President Obama and praising President Trump:

“He loved Adolf Hitler; he talked about Adolf Hitler a lot,” said Debra Gureghian, 56, a manager at the Fort Lauderdale pizza shop where Mr. Sayoc worked for about a year in 2017. “He would say, ‘I like his politics, we should have more people like him.’” Mr. Sayoc went on paranoid, racist screeds, saying that blacks and Hispanics were taking over the world. He referred to Mr. Obama with a racist slur and said he was not a citizen. …

Teresa Palmer, 48, another manager, said that she also recalled [his pro-Trump-stickered white] van, and that Mr. Sayoc would say “nasty things” about minorities. She remembered him mentioning Mr. Trump, but only recalled him saying that Mr. Trump made a “great” president.

During this time, Sayoc was an outspoken proponent of conservative conspiracy theories and pro-Trump memes, which he shared both on social media and the windows of his sticker-covered white van. There is no such support for the notion that he was pro-Obama, pro-Democrat, or even political at all prior to 2015.

This Is Us: Laura Niemi Discusses The Endless Possibilites for Her Character

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Laura Niemi has had a 20-year acting career, but 2018 may be her best yet.

After a one-year hiatus, Niemi returned to This Is Us Season 3 and will play a much larger role with the further exploration of Jack's childhood and time in Vietnam.

This Is Us is just the cherry on top of a delicious cake for this seasoned actress. She also landed a role in a Netflix film featuring Hollywood A-listers Anne Hathway and Ben Affleck.

I had the opportunity to talk with Laura Niemi about her role on This Is Us this season and what we can expect from her character moving forward. She also provides a small tease about her upcoming Netflix film.

Enjoy the full interview below, which has been slightly modified for content.

So I'm curious to know, what attracted you to This Is Us and specifically the role of Marilyn Pearson?

Well, Dan Fogelman. Hello, Dan Fogelman, Dan Fogelman, Dan Fogelman! I mean I'm a fan of his, and it was a character for which I felt I could bring something to the table. It was very exciting to me because the show had just gotten started and just gotten the spotlight on it.

And that's so exciting to be a part of something that you know viewers are watching, and it's becoming such a hit. When I auditioned, I wanted in. It was such a wonderful part, and I definitely gravitated toward that character. I love Marilyn.

When you first started on the show on This Is Us Season 1 Episode 11, This Is Us was already getting a lot of critical buzz which eventually led to a number of awards and nominations. Were you nervous when you got the role or were you just excited to get started?

I was just so excited to work with Dan Fogelman because he's such an incredible writer. I knew I was going to be in good hands with an amazing script each and every time because, as you know, the writing on this show is just incredible.

You were first introduced on This Is Us Season 1, but then we didn't really see Marilyn again. When they asked you to come back for This Is Us Season 3, what made you want to play the role again?

To find out more. In Season 1, the character wasn't really fleshed out too much. So to be able to have the chance to flesh out the character and know a little bit more about Jack's journey and his upbringing. I mean, as a viewer I was interested, but also as an actor, I wanted to know more as well.

And "Vietnam" (This Is Us Season 3 Episode 4) was not just a huge episode for the character Jack Pearson but his entire family. It also felt like it just touched the surface when it comes to exploring Jack's past. So I imagine that wasn't the last we saw of Marilyn Pearson?

All I can say is it's definitely going to be interesting to see what comes up because so far it has been very powerful. And I think it's been the best season yet. The writing is just beyond what anyone could imagine. For that particular episode of "Vietnam," they brought in a few new writers including Tim O'Brien.

He wrote an incredible book about his experience in Vietnam, and I'm really that the show is focusing on that time period and that they're bringing it to light.

Is there anything, in particular, you'd like to learn about Marilyn that hasn't yet been explored?

I'd like to explore more of Jack's childhood and the dynamic of Jack and his mom's relationship. Now I also have a new son played by Michael Angarano, and I'm looking forward to developing that storyline as well as learning about the kind of mother Marilyn was.

The last we saw of her, she left her home and moved in with her friend. And as of right now that's open-ended, we don't know what happened next. We don't know what's going to happen with her journey. It's interesting because there are so many directions the character can go in.

I'm also hoping for some bittersweet moments that can bring some joy back into the Pearson's life.

And as far as I can remember, we don't know much about what happened to Marilyn's life post-Jack and Rebecca's wedding.

What do you think happened to her? Do you think she played a role in Randall, Kate and Kevin's life when they were small kids? And would that be something you'd be interested in exploring about Marilyn?

I mean that would be the dream to be able to explore a relationship with my grandkids and with Jack as an adult. That would be a dream come true if they decide to go in that direction. You never know with this show as we're always going back and forth. I would love that so much!

Is there a particular scene or moment from your time on This Is Us so far that really stands out to you as one of your favorites?

There was a scene that when Joe the mailman comes to deliver mail which I'm excited about because I'm waiting and waiting for a letter from Nikky. And then he sees the bruise on my face and just that moment of him recognizing that there's domestic violence in that home. I just thought that was a really powerful moment.

Then there's been moments with Jack, for example when we're in the kitchen and I'm reading the letter from Nikky to Jack. We did that scene a few times, and I was just in tears by the time we were done. It was a very connected moment with myself and my son.

It was just one of those moments as an actor where you just connect with another actor, and it was a really powerful moment for me.

A majority of your scenes have been alongside Milo Ventimiglia. What is like working and acting alongside him?

Absolutely lovely. He's a lovely actor. He's very truthful and honest and very generous. He's just a really good guy, you know? He takes care of everybody on set, and he's just a wonderful actor to act with. There's not a dishonest bone in his body.

Even with Michael, although I've only worked with Michael briefly. The two of them are just my lovely boys.

Due to the storylines so far, you haven't had the chance to act alongside the rest of the This Is Us cast besides Milo. Who would you like to work with on This Is Us, whether plausible in the storyline or not?

I'd love to work with Michael Ironside (he plays Jack's grandfather). I think it would be interesting to explore our dysfunctional family dynamics, and I love his work.

While you were working This Is Us, it was announced that you would play a part in the Netflix film The Last Thing We Wanted.

Yes! Yes! Dee Rees is directing, and it includes Anne Hathway. It's frigging fantastic! It's going to be coming out in the spring of next year which I'm really excited about.

Based on the Joan Didion novel, a lot of actors don't get to have the full script in advance, so I read the book, and I was really scratching my head on how this was going to be adapted.

However, Dee did such an amazing job in the adaptation of the screenplay. I think she's one of the most important directors of our time right now. So to be able to get a chance to work with her and be on set with her this summer was just an absolute dream.

Can you tell us a little about the film and what role you play in it?

I play a reporter from The Washington Post working alongside Anne Hathway's character. It's set on 1980 morning during the Iran Contra affair.

You mentioned Anne Hathway stars in the film, and so does Ben Affleck. What has it been like working with such Hollywood heavyweights?

Throughout the trajectory of my career it's been the higher the level of talent, the easier they are to work with. You get veteran actors or actors who are at the height of their career, and there's just a sense of ease.

You would think maybe it would be a little difficult, but it's the exact opposite. They're both very professional and very generous.

So let's segway back to This Is Us. We wouldn't be called TV Fanatic if I didn't try to get some sort of tease out of you. Is there anything you can share with me about what's coming up on This Is Us the rest of this season?

Well, I can tell you that there's going to be more Vietnam. They're going to explore that storyline a little bit more. And what happens in the future with the Pearson family regarding Stanley and Marilyn and Nikki.

That's all I can give away.

Oh all right, well thanks so much for doing this interview.

No problem, and thank you and everyone out there for watching.

This Is Us Season 3 airs Tuesday 9/8 C on NBC.
